ON FEBRUARY 15, 2003, MILLIONS OF ORDINARY CITIZENS IN OVER 800 CITIES AROUND THE WORLD POURED INTO THE STREETS TO PROTEST AGAINST THE RUSH TOWARDS THE INVASION OF IRAQ.

According to BBC News, 6 to 10 million people took part in protests in up to 60 countries, on every continent, over the weekend of the 15th and 16th of February 2003. Other reports estimated the actual number was closer to 30 million. Protesters from Tasmania to Iceland, New York to Sydney, and London to Rome, marched against the impending war in Iraq. Even at the McMurdo base in Antarctica, more than 50 scientists staged a half-hour rally.

It has been described as “the biggest and most widespread collective protest the world has ever seen. Director, Amir Amirani, produced ‘We Are Many’ over 11 years, filming across seven countries including: Italy, Spain, Egypt, Sweden, Australia, the UK and the USA.

I was far too young to understand it (bare in mind I am now 18, so that would have been 13 years ago), but I remember being on my dads shoulders chanting “Down down Tony Blair!” with thousands of people….

I felt I had to do this. In all the names of the soldiers who had died in all the wars, particularly WW1 and WW11. There was no sense of us being in jeopardy. Nothing was being done about dictators…

London

I marched with friends and family. It felt empowering to be part of such a massive crowd, and we were horrified when the government took no notice. But it’s incredibly important to me that even if we weren’t able to…

We joined the march, even though we had little doubt about what was going to happen next… I grew up hearing about democracy and really believed as a kid that we were lucky enough to live in this better system….

Glasgow

My daughter insisted we go on the march. We had to get up real early to drive from Northumberland. The sheer size of the demonstration and the peaceful atmosphere re-invigorated my tired activist heart. The silence. The fierce intent. These stay with me.I…

Went with some friends to show the world that going to war again wasn’t the answer. We should have learnt from our past mistakes that going to war doesn’t resolve anything.

I went with my husband and two very small children. I felt that we were making a difference. It seemed to me that so many people’s voices must make the government listen. We were not heard. I was changed by…
