#IWasThere

ON FEBRUARY 15, 2003, MILLIONS OF ORDINARY CITIZENS IN OVER 800 CITIES AROUND THE WORLD POURED INTO THE STREETS TO PROTEST AGAINST THE RUSH TOWARDS THE INVASION OF IRAQ.

According to BBC News, 6 to 10 million people took part in protests in up to 60 countries, on every continent, over the weekend of the 15th and 16th of February 2003. Other reports estimated the actual number was closer to 30 million. Protesters from Tasmania to Iceland, New York to Sydney, and London to Rome, marched against the impending war in Iraq. Even at the McMurdo base in Antarctica, more than 50 scientists staged a half-hour rally.

It has been described as “the biggest and most widespread collective protest the world has ever seen. Director, Amir Amirani, produced ‘We Are Many’ over 11 years, filming across seven countries including: Italy, Spain, Egypt, Sweden, Australia, the UK and the USA.

I was one of several coach loads that travelled from Northampton to London that day. I had not felt that empowered since the anti-poll tax protests of the 1990’s. The spirit and unity of that day will live with me…

Rome, Italy

I was just 18… I travelled all the way from Sicily to Rome, to take part in the march. What a great day. I will never forget it.

Basel, Switzerland

New York, United States

We were in Manhattan. The demonstration and rally were being held, if I remember right, on the far East Side. We were somewhere in the middle, and the police blocked off all east-west streets to prevent us, and thousands of…

I went along to the demonstration in Sydney and was so blown away with the power and magnificence of it, that I quit art school and curated an exhibition of photography and a peace education forum, entitled When The World…

New York, United States

I marched in New York with a number of other singer friends and colleagues.  I had composed a round, a canon – for us to sing.  We marched with signs that said  “canons for peace”  and sang through the streets…

I was on the Stop The War on February 15, 2003. We know we were more than a million. More like two million. As always – furious when the figures on and in the news were watered down. At the…

My parents took me to the march when I was 6. I very clearly remember walking underneath the largest fixed white banner in Hyde Park.

London, UK

I’ve been going on marches and demos since 1974 but this was the biggest and best. One of the reasons I go on demos is to soak in the spirit of unity in a world which otherwise sometimes seems overwhelmingly…

For the first time in my life I was so angry that I felt I must do something, so I booked a coach down to London to join the march.  I arranged to meet my disabled daughter who was studying…

I marched in Sydney, Australia.  There were people there from all walks of life, young and old.  Our Prime Minister, John Howard, sneered at us and called us “a mob”.  He said “You can’t be ruled by the mob.”

Dear People – I had concomittant constitutional legislation based upon the 1798 Virginia resolves in comittee in both the House and Senate of the State of Washington that may have stopped the attack on Iraq.  When the bills were stopped from…
