My main memory is just of the enormous numbers – came on a West Midlands CND coach with members of Hall Green CND (Brum) and friends. We passed lots of other coaches with posters in the windows, often saying where they were from as well as that they were going where we were – lots of friendly waving on the motorway. We couldn’t get into Hyde Park to hear the speakers at the Rally – just too many people. That in itself was extraordinary. I do remember some of the entertainments en route: someone on the march had a placard saying ‘Blessed are the cheese makers’ – clever – the line is from Monty Python, and a deliberate corruption of ‘blessed are the peace makers’, but the reference was to George W. describing the French, who refused to take part, as ‘cheese eating surrender monkeys’.
