We were in Manhattan. The demonstration and rally were being held, if I remember right, on the far East Side. We were somewhere in the middle, and the police blocked off all east-west streets to prevent us, and thousands of others, from getting all the way to the main gathering. We had come from a National Committee meeting of the War Resisters League www.warresisters.org, and were with an extraordinary activist and friend of ours who was quite sick with cancer, Jon Cohen, who died later that year.
Multiple police officers lied to us, telling us that an east-west street a few blocks further north was open, only to be told the same thing by the police blocking off that east-west street once we got there. Eventually, Jon was exhausted, so we turned around and never made it to the main site.
